Upskilling Digital Navigators to Address Digital Literacy

Learning digital skills is not a “one shot” learning experience; by its nature, it is iterative, with more advanced skills building on basic digital literacy.

It was our partner organizations that realized that their own digital skilling efforts were less effective because many learners lacked this digital literacy. For example, a class through Goodwill University or an entrepreneurship course through CLT Alliance could be life-changing for a resident…but if simply taking a class (online or in person) presumes a level of digital literacy, there are some that will be unintentionally excluded.

To fill this gap, the CDE set out to train Digital Navigators to facilitate “digital scaling classes.” The idea is to give our Digital Navigators the ability to upskill themselves and address gaps in service across the ecosystem.

To date, four Digital Navigators have received this additional training., It  was designed to be rigorous and included:

  • The AARP’s Senior Planet Curriculum
  • A tailored curriculum developed internally by our Co-Chair for the Digital Literacy and Skilling workstream, Margo Scurry
  • Facilitation methods shared by Alexandra Arrington, CDE’s People Growth Strategy Director

Digital Navigators can now help partner organizations address digital literacy gaps, as well as better help individuals who might need help finding and accessing online resources.
