The Importance of Device Diagnostic and Repair

E2D Laptop Diagnostic Day

The CDE was able to meet its key result of supporting two no-cost laptop diagnostic and repair clinics in the first half of the year.

At these events, participants were able to bring laptops to be serviced by industry professionals who volunteered their time. Digital Navigators were also on hand to help people sign up for low-cost home internet plans, find classes to improve digital skills and troubleshoot basic computer questions.

Our first device diagnostic & repair workshop was sponsored by Duke Energy in collaboration with E2D and had around 40 participants who came for help with their devices.

Our second device diagnostic & repair workshop was held during Digital Inclusion Week 2024 and hosted by Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) at the Parr Center on their central campus. This event saw 39 students, faculty, and residents participate.

These clinics, and repair services in general, are important for digital inclusion and digital unity efforts because:

  • Timely repair of devices means that residents do not go for long periods without a working device (and thus lack internet connectivity).
  • Repairing an existing device allows residents to retain their personal data on the same machine, ensuring data privacy and reducing the stress of switching devices.
  • Repairing a device instead of buying a new one is a significant cost savings.

As these events continue, the CDE continues to learn more about how to successfully promote and support these events, as well as what the precise needs of the community are. For example, we’ve found that better tracking of who requires this service is essential for setting realistic goals and ensuring we are reaching the populations with the greatest need. This will enable the CDE to focus its efforts where the need is most urgent.
