Setting the Course: How the CDE’s New Policy Agenda is Forming and Informing Advocacy Plans

Having a solid policy agenda is a natural goal that dovetails with the other activities at the CDE. But this agenda needs to look beyond simply the next year or the next election. Our policy agenda is taking shape with the idea that our process remains sustainable yet flexible from year to year.

As related in our midyear report, we began that process by organizing several listening sessions with eight partner organizations chosen specifically to deepen our relationships in neighborhoods and with populations that are least served. These organizations were incentivized to bring forth community members to participate in seven listening sessions, with a total of 80 people participating. Sessions were facilitated by a consultant who subsequently compiled the feedback and outlined a policy agenda, which we unveiled at our November Community Council meeting.

Since then, the workstream has drilled down and explored possible actions that we can take to move this policy agenda forward. After several brainstorming sessions, the team came away with a list of 60 possible actions we could take, which have been informed by our listening sessions.

This list of ideas has been aligned with our fiscal year 2025 planning, including some objectives and key results that are tied back to the policy agenda. In this way, the policy agenda has become the CDE’s “north star” for moving the needle on policy.
