Dreams Becoming Real, with the Help of New Devices and New Connections

Many of the events hosted or supported by the CDE have as their aim getting residents connected—whether that be with a low-cost or no-cost device, a repair service, or signing up for budget-friendly internet. But the true aim goes well beyond providing technology.

Because we’re not just handing out devices or helping with connection; we’re helping residents of the Charlotte area pursue their dreams.

Thanks to the Mayor’s Racial Equity initiative (MREI), the CDE was able to support Eliminate the Digital Divide (E2D) and their events, where they help distribute refurbished laptops to those in need.

At one such laptop distribution event held recently, we took some time to interview device recipients and find out what their plans were for their new tool. What we got was a window into the hopes, dreams, and ambitions of Charlotte residents—and a feel for how such events are opening doors for people.

Here’s just a sampling of the dreams residents are pursuing:

  • An elementary school teacher who wants to use her device to find lessons and resources online, and learn some new digital skills herself.
  • A young woman with dreams of starting her own marketing company.
  • A job-seeker eager to research new job opportunities
  • Another job-seeker who wants to update her resume and possibly build a digital marketing service.
  • A business owner who plans to use the laptop to keep his records and books, and take advantage of online tools.
  • A resident looking to go online to get her recertification, and maybe also pay some bills.
  • A college attendee who plans to use the laptop for summer courses.
  • Several other college students who look forward to being able to do course work without depending on public computers at the library.
  • A personal care aide who plans to use the device to juggle her busy schedule.
  • A resident looking forward to balancing their finances, and even considering going back to school to become a medical assistant.
  • Another resident looking to brush up on his technical skills to enter a technical profession.
  • A disabled person who is now able to work from home.
  • A person who plans to stay connected with friends and family, and even start a job search.
  • A spanish-speaking resident who is not only searching for jobs, but brushing up on their English.

We want to respect the privacy of those we have served, so we are not sharing the names of these people publicly. But for readers who want to get a more in-depth feel for the impact these events have, check out some of our other impact stories. Or you can simply view the video below!

As for what residents are saying about the events themselves…

  • This event was well organized!
  • The process was simple and easy! The laptop was much needed.
  • I do appreciate everything they are doing to help us. Thank you.
  • I was in need of a computer and this was the blessing I truly needed..Thank you for helping the community and thank you to everyone [who helped at the event]!
  • Great service.
  • The staff and volunteers are amazing on their person-centered customer engagement!
  • …the whole experience was just a plus. My little girl played IN THE PARK WHILE I WAITED IN LINE. They served snacks and water the whole time. The process…well it didn’t feel like a process it was soooooo organized and just flowed well. Thank you!
  • I look forward to becoming proficient in using a computer and  I am very grateful for this “gift.”  THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
  •  I absolutely love this organization and hope and pray I have the opportunity to either pay them back one day or pay it forward.

Again, we are proud to be a connector between the MREI, E2D, and the people of Charlotte. Such collaborations help to make the ecosystem more connected and more holistic at the same time, meaning that it can better serve residents—and be better stewards of funds.
